My CISSP Journey Begins – Why I’m Doing This and What You Can Expect
I’ve officially started my journey to become CISSP-certified and I’m going all in. What does it mean? It means 3 months of focused and structured preparation. Fun, isn't it?
Why I’m doing this
When I started my undergraduate studies in Cybersecurity, I thought I knew nothing, but I believed I would learn everything there.
Three years later, I finished my bachelor’s degree. And yet, I still felt like I knew… nothing. Surely a master’s degree would fix that, right?
Well, this time, I wasn’t so naive. I realized I had to take things into my own hands. So alongside my master’s studies, I started learning cybersecurity outside of school, attending seminars, reading, and taking online courses. And something unexpected happened: I realized I knew a lot more than most people I met there.
But I also knew it still wasn’t enough. So I kept going.
Fast forward a few years — I’ve completed my master’s degree and today I work as a Cybersecurity Manager. I can talk for hours about risk analysis, cybersecurity concepts, access control models…you name it.
So why am I studying for this exam? Why spend countless of hours grinding through something this challenging?
Because the CISSP isn’t just about being a specialist.
It’s about understanding how it all fits together.
It’s about showing that you can think like a security leader across disciplines, business goals, and risk landscapes.
And that’s exactly what I’m aiming for: To connect every piece of knowledge I’ve gathered, and prove to myself and others that I’m ready for the next level.
What's the plan?
Here’s how I’m approaching it:
3 months of structured preparation
Studying one domain per week, revisiting weak areas in between
Using a combination of books, notes, flashcards, and mindmaps
Writing every week to reflect, simplify, and summarize what I’ve learned
I’m not here to pretend I know all the answers.
Quite the opposite, actually.
The CISSP book has over 1,300 pages, and I’m absolutely sure there are things in there I’ve never even heard of.
But that’s the point.
I’m sharing this process not because I’ve mastered it but because I’m in it with you.
And if you ever decide to go down the same path, maybe what I document here will make your journey a little easier.
Who is this for
If you're preparing for the CISSP — or even just thinking about it — this newsletter might save you hours of trial-and-error… and probably some $$$ too.
If you're a security professional who’s great at technical execution but wants to level up into strategy, leadership, or architecture, this might give you the roadmap.
If you're just curious about what it takes to pass one of the toughest cybersecurity exams out there - Welcome aboard!
Let the game begins!
It looks like you are up for a great journey. The next you need to add is to attend industry conferences where you will also learn a lot from cybersecurity leaders and their presentation, and make some contacts along the way. These events are great for networking.
